It was February 29 again, and I was wondering which member of my family would try to kill me this time. It wasn’t that we weren’t happy, and we don’t actually want to kill each other, at least not in the traditional sense of murder, massacre, and carnage. And there’s really only one member I have to be careful around; as they say, “one person’s meat is another person’s poison.” In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever been happier. I have a cozy home, work I enjoy, a fearless running partner, and I’ve never eaten a more delicious or varied carnivorous menu in my life. I both blame and credit the flitterbit.

Looking out at my forest view, it’s hard to believe it’s been one year and 101 days since I used to begin each morning writing in my gratitude journal. My life at the time was based on the perky belief that problems always worked themselves out. I liked my barista job — most days — and lived with the love of my life, Pierre, though he said things like, “It’s the similarities that attract people but the differences that keep them together.” That meant he played Dungeons & Dragons on Wednesday nights with his friends while I stayed home and watched French films on Netflix.

The problem one year and 101 days ago? I was running out of French movies.

Maybe I should both blame and credit Pierre as the one who shook everything up in our lives by deciding it was time to finish his opus, How to Find Your Purpose in the Labyrinth of Life. He had asked me to reserve a quiet place for our upcoming ten-day holiday, and I found just the thing: a self-contained cabin on his island of choice. The owner advertised his rental as having privacy, ocean views, and wonder of wonders, access to a small labyrinth he’d made, using rocks to outline the edges of the meandering spiral path.

This island had been on the top of Pierre’s go-to list because he’d read in some book in his Mythical Creatures class at university about reported 1890 sightings of elusive flitterbits. He was keen to see if he could make contact and thought the Vancouver Aquarium might pay big bucks for one. “A flitterbit,” he told me for the fifth time, as he packed his newly bought butterfly net with its extendable handle, “is a flying squirrel that moves through the air so fast it isn’t visible to the human eye.”

It sounded silly, but it was kind of sweet that he was so excited.
